Today we served minestrone soup and grilled cheese.  I make 45 loaves of bread into grilled cheese sandwiches. It was amazing how the last soup day coincided with a chilly spring day.
The best part of the day was the fifth grade helping us in the kitchen for spring spruce up.
They cleaned everything so well and were really good sports about even the dirtiest of chores.
Thanks fifth grade!

Cheese quesadilla

Today we served cheese quesadillas, spanish rice, and grapes. Veggie quesadillas were an option.
The veggie quesadillas were full of mushrooms peppers and onions.

Today was a special day, as we had a treat.  Cake was served.  From scratch chocolate cake!
I was way too busy to remember to take a pic but I promise I will try harder to take pics.

Pancake bar day

Pancake bar was a crazy day. Too busy to take a pic. Broccoli quiche was offered as well as roasted potatoes,  vanilla yogurt and fruit.  The pancakes were served with a lot of topping choices.
My favorite topping is the triple berry sauce that we make from scratch.  Lots of happy kids today.
I know that lots of parents cringe when they realize that this was on the menu today. Just keep in mind that this meal is a treat and will not be offered on a regular basis.   Twice a year I promise.
Twice a year just like chocolate milk.  I really think that we can sneak in some treats but also offer lots of healthy options.  I am so shocked at the amount of students who know and like our "from scratch" quiche.

chili beans

Friday April 20, 2012
We served chili beans. Black, pinto and white beans make up the bulk of this soup.
Tomatoes onions and peppers make up the rest of the ingredients as well as spices.
Very healthy meal! We do however offer corn chips and cheese as final touches.
Yum!

bagel sandwich

Chili beans were on the menu today but about a hundred students were
out on field trips so we switched todays chili beans with tomorrows bagel sandwich.
This way those eating bagels for their field trip wouldn't have to eat a bagel again tomorrow. We offer cream cheese or hummus or just a plain bagel.
Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and bell peppers were topping options.
Carrots and celery were also options. The salad bar was a busy place today!

Most students choose the garlic spaghetti
Steamed broccoli was also available.
The fresh fruit today was a mixture of melons and oranges and grapes.

chicken and rice with curry veggies

Today we served roast chicken in gravy over basmati rice. Vegetarian option was curried veggies. I would guess that 1/3 of our students chose curry. The curry was full of asparagus and broccoli, cauliflower onions and even raisins.
Jicama was served on the salad bar today and we watched as some students were cautiously trying it. Jicama has a crunchy and refreshing taste. If you haven't tried it you should.

chicken noodle soup

Today we served chicken noodle soup, the vegetarian option was minestrone.
The soup is a favorite at McGillis. It will be warm soon and we stop serving soup when it's warm outside. If you have not taken a look at the school garden, you should stop by it is amazing.
